Before Merlin's demise, we noticed a distortion affecting the gazebo near the book shop. Can you explain what that is?

That's the instability that plagues this island that I mentioned when you all arrived -- the disaster we're trying to appease by offering sacrifices. You've probably noticed that with Merlin's death, the distortion has also vanished.

How was it, seeing it up close?

Not pleasant, though I did not touch it myself.

Is this distortion a manifestation of what keeps us here?

Wise choice. That was just a preview, so you wouldn't have lost a limb, but you won't always be so lucky.

Indeed, I believe the instability of the island is what makes the mechanism itself unstable and difficult to study.
