Week 1 Wed, voice

[ It is a beautiful sunny morning and Psyche has figured out the phone... probably. Maybe.

Hopefully Ho-oh is a morning person. ]

Hello, Mister Ho-oh? Oh, is this working correctly...

[There's a rustle, and a mutter that sounds suspiciously like 'We should've selected for technological competence', but surely it's just your imagination beneath the (slightly clearer) synthetic crackling of the speaker.

Though, the answer was prompt, so maybe they're a morning person. Of a sort.]

Good morning. Not one to take advantage of vacation hours, I see.

[ Hm... She does have a bit of an imagination. If there's a rustle of paper and the quiet scritching of a pen, perhaps that's just the connection quality in turn. ]

Oh, there's too much to see here for me to spend all my time sleeping. I hope I'm not bothering you. I can send a message in advance next time, if you'd like? I was just hoping for a chance to talk a little more.

[If Ho-oh has taken note of the background note noise, they don't remark on it.]

This place is exciting in more than one way, that's true.

[It's so deadpan that pan's about to roll under the tectonic plates and tunnel its way to Australia. Wherever Australia is in relation to this place. Anyways.]

... I don't mind. More messages would be redundant, and I'm usually up at this time.

What was it you wanted?

[ The pan is the first casualty of peace week...

Psyche makes an agreeable little hum — exciting is a fair label, and she knows her weight class where sarcasm is concerned. Even if Medea would have had some wonderful contributions to make here. ]

You've been on the island longer than any of us. I was wondering if you could tell me more about how things work here. Where the food comes from, or how often people arrive? I'd like to get to know you a little better, too. But I thought you might be too busy just to chat.

[ But she leaves that on a rising hopeful note of invitation, just in case. ]

[At least Pan isn't the first casualty of peace week--

There's a considering pause, after, but the crackle of the not-so-perfect voice connection is maybe the saving grace here. It lets Psyche know her companion hasn't hung up.]

As long as we're not dealing with any crises from the island or one of you, I have some free time now and then to keep an eye on the resort.

[Why do they make it sound like babysitting.]

We're not going to run out of food, if that's what you're worried about. We don't need you getting wiped out like a pack of shipwrecked sailors after the work we put in to bring you here. And given the way we've studied the mechanism that brought us here -- we haven't really had any issues with more accidental arrivals.

Besides the stuff, anyway.

[ I, PERSONALLY, AM GOING TO FIGHT EVERY ONE OF YOU IN A DENNY'S PARKING LOT.

Luckily Psyche had never let herself hope for something as simple as "we have a supply boat that comes by every week." She fights a tiny frown of disappointment anyway -- maybe it will carry in her voice, after all -- and dutifully notes it down. ]

That's a relief, at least. I thought it might be hard to account for [ Beelzebub ] just how much we need, or keep it from spoiling. At least it's only the energy problem we need to worry about. I suppose if we all starved, you don't know what that much supernatural energy all at once would do to the... mechanism, either.

[ Mngh... maybe she shouldn't say things aloud that will give her nightmares. ]

...The stuff? What stuff?

[Joke's on you, I don't go to Denny's. ☆

There's something dry in the response, either because Psyche's disappointment has snuck through the airwaves under the static or because, well...]

Starved, or collectively fed to your neighborhood demon, you mean. But you're correct -- if we didn't have a reliable way of getting food, we'd have to deal with the demon along with the island's issues. This place is unstable enough without hitting it with all of that at once.

[Static, or just a sigh.]

Items associated with where you came from. I assume it's a side effect of the mechanism. They show up after the person arriving, usually at random.

[ Hm... another nightmare unlocked. Would he really eat people? Somehow, Psyche does not envision herself asking him that in the future.

Maybe some of that is best ignored. Politely. ]

Oh! Did that happen when you arrived, too? The things in the little shops here... are those from your home?

[ A 'side effect' sounds harmless enough. Medea could have used this information, somehow. It's a little frustrating. ]

[personal profile] ho_ohs 2023-05-22 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Poor Psyche and her nightmare vacation........... on the bright side(????) there's plenty of people asking that question for her! And, well, common courtesy is a great way to deal with cannibalism(?), we're sure.]

Nothing in the shops. But yes, we did run into some things from home -- I'll say some of them can be helpful, but there's also a lot of junk. So don't expect much, and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised.

What was the last thing it sent me... one glove? Something like that.

[Harmless, but is it really useful.]

[personal profile] chrysaline 2023-05-22 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Listen, being polite has (probably?) never gotten anyone eaten faster than being rude has. Psyche is just going to have to stick to her guns on that one. ]

Only one? That's a little haphazard of it... [ She has to laugh a little, though. At the mental image? The only mental image she has of Ho-oh is "palm tree"... or bird. ] So it just keeps doing that?

[ A thought, less sunny, flickers across her mind: ] ...Even for the people who already died? The others who were here with you.
ho_ohs: (Default)

[personal profile] ho_ohs 2023-05-23 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's a pretty haphazard phenomenon.

[The dryest. Maybe they aren't aware she's picturing a bird or a palm tree with a glove stuck on it, but would she really be wrong at this point.

A pause, then, as they seem to register the sudden swing in ideas -- maybe surprise, maybe something else.]

Morbid of you. But no, I wouldn't know. There's junk landing here at the best of times, and I didn't exactly have time to conduct a survey about who might own what when I got here. I doubt they would have told me, either way.

If you start running into things that don't seem to belong to anyone later, though, it might just not belong to anyone.

[Surely it will be Fine.]

[personal profile] chrysaline 2023-05-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She's not wrong for this and she's accepting no criticism at the moment. He's lucky she doesn't yet understand Ho-oh's appalling type weaknesses. ]

Is it morbid? It's a little hard to forget that people have died here. [ She doesn't sound angry, exactly, but it's distinctly firmer than her voice before. ] ...I can see where tracking down all the owners would be a lot of unnecessary work, though. Especially if some don't have any, and you have research to be doing. How long have you been here, Mister Ho-oh?

[ There's probably no downside to just asking outright, even if he doesn't answer. ]
