In their beginning conversations there was a lot of surface-level superficial aspects because of everything that Merlin is (and everything that WWX is but this is about Merlin)
They hit it off well though because of those similar aspects, and Merlin had great incentive to hang around with him. Other magician, arrogant, and has good taste? Hello?
I'll say it point-blank that if Merlin had survived to another week, he would have just flat-out propositioned him for a time in the garden. He was kind of initially building up to that, because he has no shame. That being said, something about their last talk before they parted their ways on the beach resonated and not just because they shared a kiss and he was thirsty as hell about it, but also because they managed to connect a little. And that Merlin began to sort of cotton on to the idea that people might genuinely like hanging out with him here? So he thought that was real nice and got emotional over the bit, lmao
Though, after he died, he figured that they wouldn't interact again and that WWX would also forget about him! Like with no sense of being actually bothered at the thought - just that it was a natural consequence of people parting. And they'd only known each other for a week? How deep of a bond could be formed in such a short amount of time?
Honestly, he didn't even expect him to be sad over his death, laughs
But as he saw that this was the case in various ways he went to himself, 'ah' you know in the exact way that someone is realizing a thing a bit more sharply now. Merlin and emotions is a tough topic because acknowledging the fact he truly and earnestly cares about someone means acknowledging he has those, which is why when he had that talk next time over the network he was really touched when WWX pointed out people missed him (a fact he couldn't refute) even if he ... still didn't kind of like. Think he felt that sort of thing at all either (why is he like this)
Though the next interesting thing is the poisoning that happened like a day or so after? I didn't get a chance to do a reaction from him in GY other than imply he was more short with people and just hardly showed up but he was angry about that! In his own way, lmfao
Because despite everything about his own thoughts of 'who can get close to someone within a week', coupled with everything, he oopsed his way into at least some degree of fondness. He was happy for him, of course, when certain things happened his way, so naturally when the bad things happened, he'd be pissy about it. He did try to search for the Poisoner as a fyi but he got nothing and felt a little bad he couldn't help out
Anyways, WWX also was one of the two who took care of Fou (the little guy who he playfights with) so he was grateful for that too.
All of these also culminated (despite the obvious fact of uh Xiao dying that week) in him even checking in on him following that to see if he was okay...which he has done for those he cared about as well but shh
He's also definitely happy he didn't die because even if Merlin missed seeing him face to face, he would want him the chance to be alive and strive towards answers on getting out of the place instead of feeling a bit useless.
In the end, with all of these things, and being able to reach out a bit, Merlin was able to actually consider him as one of his few friends here. So, congrats!

NIK. i went into this cr going "oh god they're gonna hate each other, aren't they" because demon + demon slayer combo? hmmmm. instead, what i got were TEARS!!! SO MANY!! TEARS!!!!!!
i think what really helped xiao warm up to beel was when he started seeing more and more glimpses of there being a real, living person beneath the "demon" exterior. it made him realize he had to stop with the pretenses, and at least try to get along with his roommate. that eventually developed into genuine friendship, and then a surprising amount of love and care, because xiao would literally die for this man now. he stayed quiet during the trial because even though he knew there were a few things that pointed to beel, he just couldn't bring himself to put any attention on his dodo friend. beel is one of two people xiao cried on in this game, and i cried at some of our threads because god damn they were emotional when they had no right to be this good.
beel's sincerity is really what won xiao over in the end, because they are both two very honest people who truly tried their best in this game. and because of this wild ride, xiao is going to make it a point to see beel again!! THAT'S HIS BROTHER, YOUR HONOR.
